Step 5: Swap Yellow Edges In The Top Layer

solve the Rubiks Cube yellow edgesIn the previous step we created a yellow cross on the top of the Rubik's Cube but probably the yellow edges are not all fitting to the colors of the side center pieces. In this stage of the Rubik's Cube solution we have have to fix this by repositioning these cubelets.

The algorithm switches the front-top and the left-top edges as marked on the image:

R U R' U R U2 R' U

U2 marks a double face turn (180 degrees).

When you get to this stage the first thing you have to do is to rotate around the top layer trying to find two edges which have to be switched. Sometimes it can occur that you can't find two pieces to swap next to each other, because you would have to swap two which are facing each other. In this case you'll have to execute the permutation twice, as shown on the second animation.

Switch two edges in the last layer

Press the play button to see how to switch the orange-yellow and green-yellow edges.

Sometimes the algorithm has to be applied twice

Execute it twice to swap to pieces in the opposite sides of the cube. In this example the green and blue edges:
U (R U R' U R U2 R' U) y2 (R U R' U R U2 R' U)

What does y2 mean?
Robert Prudenti Jr.
y2 means that you are rotating the entire cube 180° over the y axis. You can see it if you play the animation. So you're spinning the front to the back and the left and right sides will swap places.
If the notation was simply "y," you would rotate the cube 90° in a clockwise direction over the y-axis, putting the front to the left side, etc.

Excellent website
I learnt so fast, in just 15 days, to solve the whole cube, thank you very much

Well... didn't you get help from the website here?

No one help him website is no human

If you concentrate on the steps and look for the right examples it could work

No this site does not compare to CubeSolve.com

I was like that for a little bit Then I did a print screen pasted into editing program and pasted the cube puictures with algorithms into a few pages and printed them I refer to the sheet and have eventually learned how to solve the first two layesr and the last algorithm without help still have a few algorithms to completely add to memory then I'll have the beginner method down, I have noticed lately if I mess up I can fix the cube quickly so it is starting to become slightly more intuitive as well. -

What do i do, if i have followed the instructions and have solved the yellow side, but one of the yellow pieces are not solved?

Your cube might have been taken apart and assembled in an invalid state. You have to take that piece out and put it back correctly.
