Online Pyraminx Solver and Simulator
Calculate the solution of your scrambled Pyraminx with this free online solver, or play with the triangle puzzle on the screen. Set the colors, press Solve and follow the shortest possible solution, 11 moves at most. No download required.
The Pyraminx is the second best selling twisty puzzle in the world and its solution is undeniably easier than solving a Rubik's Cube, but still not so self-evident, so you might need this tool. The program works like our cube solvers: copy the colors of your puzzle to the 3D model, and it finds the optimal solution in a fraction of a second.
How To Use The Pyraminx Solver?
1. Pick A View
Use the tabs above the puzzle to switch between the 3D view and the unfolded Flat view, which shows all four faces at once. In the 3D view the Left and Right buttons (or the arrow keys) turn the pyramid by a third, Flip turns it upside down to show the bottom, and Transp makes the hidden faces shine through.
2. Set Up The Scrambled Puzzle
Hold your Pyraminx with one face toward you and a tip pointing up, then copy the colors to the screen:
- 🎨 Pick a color on the palette and click the stickers one by one.
- 🖱️ Or click a sticker repeatedly, without a color selected, to cycle through the four colors.
- ⌨️ Or type a scramble algorithm into the box and press the checkmark.
It does not matter which face is in front or which color is on the bottom: the program reads the color scheme from the pieces themselves. It checks every tip, center and edge piece, and tells you if a sticker is wrong, a piece is mirrored, or the puzzle was put together in an unsolvable way.
You can also turn the layers with the buttons or with your keyboard. The Pyraminx has four tips: Up, Left, Right and Back.
🔺 A capital letter turns the two layers under that tip clockwise (looking at the tip).
🔸 A lowercase letter turns the tip only.
🔄 An apostrophe ' means counterclockwise (hold Shift on the keyboard).

Hit Scramble for a random position, Reset to go back to the solved puzzle, or Blank to erase the colors and start over.
3. Calculate The Solution
When the colors on the screen match your puzzle, press Solve. The solution appears right under the Pyraminx. Play it with the ▶ button and set the speed with the slider, or click through the moves one by one: the layer really turns on the 3D model, so you can see exactly which pieces move. Below the puzzle you'll find a picture of every step with the moving layer outlined and an arrow showing the direction.
The tips come first in the solution, because they turn independently of everything else. Then the two-layer moves put the edges in place. Make sure you hold the pyramid the same way as the 3D model when you apply the moves.
How Does It Find The Solution?
Without the tips, a Pyraminx has 933,120 positions. The program describes the position with two numbers, the arrangement of the six edges and the orientation of the edges and centers, and searches the move sequences one length at a time with two precomputed tables telling it how far each number is from solved. The first solution it finds is therefore a shortest one: no Pyraminx position needs more than 11 moves (plus the tips), and most random scrambles are solved in 8 or 9.
Impossible Scramble Error
If the program says that your scramble is impossible, go back and check the colors. The most common mistakes are two stickers swapped between neighboring pieces and a wrongly colored tip or center. If every sticker is right and the error stays, your puzzle was taken apart and reassembled in an unsolvable state: an edge piece is flipped or two edges are swapped. Pop out an edge and put it back the right way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the shortest solution?
Yes, counting the two-layer moves. The tips are turned first and separately, and a tip turn is counted as a move of its own.
Why do the tips come first?
A tip is a single piece that turns on its own axis and does not touch anything else, so it can be fixed at any time. Doing it first lets you forget about it.
Does it work with other color schemes?
Yes. The program reads which colors sit together on the pieces, so any color scheme works as long as the stickers describe a real Pyraminx.
