Algorithm notation. The Pyramorphix is a 2x2x2 in a tetrahedral shape, so its moves name the six halves of that core: R and L (right and left), U and D (top and bottom), F and B (front and back). A plain letter turns the half clockwise seen from outside, an apostrophe is the reverse and 2 is a half turn. A 90-degree turn shape-shifts the puzzle, while a 2 keeps the tetrahedron. Brackets repeat or invert a group: (R U' F2)x3 or (R U' F2)3 plays it three times and (R U)' plays its inverse. The second input loads an algorithm into the player under the puzzle, played on the puzzle as it stands (set up a scramble with the first input): step through it with the buttons, press play, or click a move to jump there.
Online Pyramorphix Simulator
Free 3D Pyramorphix simulator: a 2x2x2 cube disguised as a shape-shifting pyramid. Scramble it, time your solves and use 2x2 algorithms to bring it back.
About this Pyramorphix simulator
At first sight the Pyramorphix looks like a simpler Pyraminx, but inside it is a 2x2x2 Pocket Cube with a tetrahedral shell. It turns on the edges rather than the corners, and its eight pieces are the eight cubies of a 2x2x2: four of them are shaped into the pointed tips of the pyramid and four into flat triangles in the middle of the faces. Meffert's first planned to sell it as the "Junior Pyraminx" before the shape-changing name won. The shape-shifting is the fun part: a quarter turn tips the pyramid into an irregular solid, while a half turn keeps it a perfect tetrahedron.
How to use the simulator
- Turn any half of the puzzle by dragging it, or use the keyboard: R, L, U, D, F and B turn the six halves clockwise as seen from outside that half, and Shift reverses the turn. Drag the background to orbit the view.
- Scramble plays an animated random sequence and shows its moves afterwards; Undo takes moves back and Reset restores the solved pyramid.
- Timer: press Start/Stop or the Space bar. Scramble puts the timer back to zero but does not start it.
- Algorithms: type a sequence into the first input and press Apply, or load it into the player under the puzzle and step through it one move at a time. The demos below the notation notes include the sexy move, the Sune and a Y-perm.
- Share: the link and embed boxes turn the scramble and algorithm you typed into a URL or an iframe code.
How to solve the Pyramorphix
Because the mechanism is a 2x2x2, any 2x2x2 method works and the notation is the same: R, U, F and the rest mean exactly what they mean on a Pocket Cube. A layer-by-layer plan works well:
- Solve one layer of the hidden cube: four pieces, two tips and two face triangles, that belong together and sit correctly against each other.
- Hold that layer at the bottom and finish the top layer with 2x2 last-layer algorithms, such as the Sune
R U R' U R U2 R'to orient pieces and the Y-perm from the demo list to swap them. - Do not worry about the shape along the way: the outline depends only on where the pieces are, so the tetrahedron comes back by itself once every piece is home.
If you already solve the 2x2x2 cube, the main challenge is recognising a "corner" when it looks like a flat triangle. Practising here with the player slowed down is a good way to build that intuition.
Is the Pyramorphix the same as the Pyraminx?
No. The Pyraminx turns around its four corners in 120-degree steps and has tips, centres and edges. The Pyramorphix turns around its edges in 90-degree steps and is a 2x2x2 in disguise, so it changes shape and the Pyraminx does not.
How many positions does it have?
As a 2x2x2 it has 3,674,160 positions when the orientation of every piece can be seen. On a plainly coloured Pyramorphix the flat face centres can sit in a different orientation without any visible change, which leaves 136,080 positions that actually look different.
Is there a bigger version?
Yes, the Master Pyramorphix, a 3x3x3 in a tetrahedral shell. You can try it on the Mastermorphix simulator.
