Algorithm notation. The Master Kilominx is the 4x4 version of the Megaminx, as the Kilominx is its 2x2 version. Every edge holds four pieces - a corner, two edge wings and another corner - and each face shows five X-centres meeting in the middle, so like the 4x4x4 it has no fixed centres and its face colours are decided by the centres you build. The twelve faces are U R F L BL BR DR DL DBL DBR B and D, written in capitals. A plain face name turns that face 72 degrees clockwise, a prime turns it counter-clockwise, and 2 or 2' is a 144-degree turn either way. 2R turns the inner slice under R alone and Rw (or 2Rw) turns R together with that slice. The WCA scramble moves also work: R++ and R-- turn everything except the L face 144 degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise seen from the right, D++ and D-- turn everything except U. y rotates the whole puzzle around U, and brackets repeat or invert a group: (R U R' U')x3 or (R U R' U')3 plays it three times and (R U)' plays its inverse. The second input loads an algorithm into the player under the puzzle, played on the puzzle as it stands (set up a scramble with the first input): step through it with the buttons, press play, or click a move to jump there.

Master Kilominx simulator: the 4x4 Megaminx

The Master Kilominx does for the Megaminx what the 4x4x4 Rubik's Revenge does for the 3x3. Every edge of the dodecahedron is split into four pieces - a corner, two edge wings and another corner - and each face carries five X-centres that meet in the middle. That gives 20 corners, 60 edge wings and 60 X-centres, with no fixed centre anywhere, so the colour scheme is something you build rather than something the puzzle hands you. Each face has an outer layer and one inner slice, and both can be turned.

Controls

  • Drag the stickers to turn the layer they move with, an outer face or an inner slice depending on the piece and the direction. Drag the background to orbit.
  • Keyboard: U, F, R, L and D turn the labelled outer faces; Shift turns them counter-clockwise.
  • Scramble, Undo, Reset and a Start/Stop timer. The Space bar toggles the timer, and scrambling does not start it, so you get to plan your first centre.
  • Size menu to move between the Kilominx, Master Kilominx, Megaminx and the bigger minxes.

Notation for the inner slices

Face turns use the usual Megaminx names: U R F L BL BR DR DL DBL DBR B D. A number in front picks the inner layer, so 2R turns only the slice under R, while Rw (or 2Rw) turns R together with that slice, just like wide moves on a big cube. R++, D-- and y work as on the Megaminx. The demo list is a good place to see the difference: run the sexy move, then the wide sexy move Rw U Rw' U', then the inner-slice version 2R U 2R' U', and watch which pieces each one disturbs. The algorithm player under the puzzle steps through any sequence one move at a time, forwards or back.

How to solve it: reduction

Most solvers treat the Master Kilominx like a 4x4x4 solved by reduction and reduce it to a puzzle they already know:

  1. Centres: gather the five X-centres of each colour onto one face. Start with one face, build its neighbours, and leave the last few for the end, when you need short slice-face-slice sequences that do not break finished centres.
  2. Edges: pair the two wings of each edge so they show the same two colours, then store the pair away from the faces you still need.
  3. Megaminx stage: with centres built and edges paired, the outer layers behave like a Megaminx with a fixed centre on every face. Finish with outer turns only.

For the last stage, the Ruwix Megaminx solution covers the layer-by-layer steps and the last-layer algorithms.

How is it related to the Kilominx?

The Kilominx is the 2x2 Megaminx, made of corners only (see the Kilominx solution). The Master Kilominx keeps those corners, adds edge wings and X-centres, and shares the Kilominx's lack of fixed centres, so both puzzles can be held any way up at the start of a solve.

Is it harder than the Megaminx?

It has 140 pieces against 50, and the centre and edge stages are extra work, but once reduced it is a Megaminx solve. If you can already solve a 4x4x4 and a Megaminx, you know every idea it needs.

Can I practise just the reduction?

Yes. Scramble, build the centres and pair the edges, then press Reset and scramble again. The 5x5x5 cube trains the same centre and edge skills. Undo makes it easy to experiment with slice moves without losing your progress.
